On Friday, June 3d, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI met with Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority which recently brought the terrorist group Hamas into the organization. After the meeting, the pope said “that soon the state of Israel and the Palestinian state must live in security, at peace with their neighbors and within internationally recognized borders.” And it has to happen soon, since the United Nations General Assembly will vote on recognizing a palestinian state in September.
There are many things wrong with this. Besides meeting with a terrorist organization that recently gained support from Egypt’s soon to be ruling government, the Muslim Brotherhood, the pope is in severe error in thinking that chopping off another chunk of land rightfully belonging to Israel and giving it to a non-nation, there are theological issues that come into play.
There is no question that the Roman church and the Jews have had, at best, a tedious relationship. Although they’ve never said it officially by name, the Roman church believes that since the Jews “killed Jesus,” the church from that moment has replaced the Jews as God’s chosen people. Nothing could be further from the truth. But given Rome’s record, demanding a Palestinian state be formed should come to no surprise to those who believe that replacement theology is false doctrine. Thus, given the Word of God on this, the Pope is putting his followers in dire straits.
Now the Pope is recognized as a great theological scholar. One would think then that he has read through the Bible at least once. And that he had read Genesis, in particular the parts containing God’s covenant with Abraham and his descendants. Just in case he hasn’t, I’ll briefly comment on these verses that the Pope seems to have just glanced over.
And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”~~Genesis 12:3
This promise was made during God’s first contact with Abraham, that He would make the patriarch and his descendants a great nation. Let’s consider the curse part of God’s promise. Anyone who is against Abraham, his descendants, which are those through his son Isaac and then Jacob, they will be cursed by God. This includes both individuals and nations. It is a long list of nations that have raised the sword or failed to support the Jews and the state of Israel. For example, there is no longer a Babylonian empire, nor an Assyrian empire. The empire of Alexander the Great no longer exists as is true of the Roman Empire. Does the pope really want to risk God’s wrath on his church? I would hope not, but then again, given their history with the Jews, Rome will go to great lengths to support anyone except the Jews and Israel.
On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your descendants I have given this land, From the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates: ~~Genesis 15:18
Here God describes the nation that will be planted by Abraham and his descendants. Note the large mass of land this is!
Why would the Pope want Israel to give up the land that God ordained? If anything, Israel is currently occupying just a tiny piece of its true, God given borders, with most of its land currently being occupied by Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Turkey. Why doesn’t the pope, great scholar that he is, realize this? Why isn’t he calling on the true occupiers of the covenant land to return it to its rightful owners? Again, taking land away from Israel is not going to lead to God blessing anyone, but curse He will.
And Abraham said to God, “Oh that Ishmael might live before You!” 19 But God said, “No, but Sarah your wife will bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his [b]descendants after him.~~Genesis 17:18-19
Perhaps the Pope believes that the covenant with Abraham includes the descendents of all his offspring. In the above verse, we see that it is only through Isaac that the covenant will continue. (It is unconditional and unending by the way). Here Abraham, in his old age, is seen seriously doubting that he and Sarah will ever be able to produce a son. Abraham asks God to basically make Ishmael the holder of the covenant. But God plainly tells the patriarch that it will pass through only Isaac and then through Jacob and the descendants that follow, including the present Jewish state of Israel. To think otherwise is again, is asking to be placed under God’s curse.
May all who hate Zion Be put to shame and turned backward;~~Psalm 129:5
The psalmist sums it up clearly and simply. The pope and all world leaders, including our own misinformed and theologically naïve President must take heed concerning their relationship with Israel. To treat Israel as if she were the scum of the earth isn’t going to bless anyone. All one needs to do is look at the world condition. Israel has no true friends; not even the leadership of this country. The world leaders need to be prayed for, that they will change their view of God’s chosen people and end the constant attacks against Israel. Otherwise, life will not be good for any of the leaders nor their people.
